Adding Sales Tax to an Estimate

Mark taxable items in your Cost Book, then set the project tax rate from the Amount column on the Scope tab.

Sales tax in Eano works item by item, not as one lump on the bottom of the quote. You mark the items that are taxable in your Cost Book, add them to a project’s scope, and then set the project’s tax rate from the Amount column on the Scope tab. Eano folds the tax into the price of each taxable line.

There’s no tax setting in your account settings and no “tax” field on the estimate itself. If you’ve been hunting for one, that’s why you couldn’t find it.

Why It Works This Way

Most remodels mix taxable materials with non-taxable labor. Taxing item by item means the tile gets taxed and the installer’s hours don’t, without you doing the math on every quote. Your Cost Book remembers which items are taxable, so you set it once and it follows those items into every estimate.

Step 1: Mark Your Taxable Items in the Cost Book

  1. In the left-hand navigation, go to Resources and open Cost Book Setup.

  2. Find the item you want taxed and tick its Taxable? box. You can do it right in the list, or open the item and tick Taxable? in its details.

  3. Repeat for every item that should carry tax.

Step 2: Add Those Items to Your Scope

Open the project or opportunity and go to the Scope tab. Click into the add-item row in any section and start typing — the dropdown has a Cost Book tab with your saved items. Pick one to add it, or click Browse Cost Book to look through your categories and add several at once.

Only items that come in from your Cost Book can be taxed. A line you type in yourself doesn’t carry a taxable setting.

Step 3: Set the Project’s Tax Rate

  1. On the Scope tab, find the Amount column header.

  2. Click the gear icon next to it. A Tax Settings box opens: “Apply a tax rate to cost-book items marked as taxable.”

  3. Enter your rate as a percentage and click Save. You’ll see “Tax rate saved.”

The Tax Settings box, opened from the gear next to the Amount column header on the Scope tab

Every taxable line in the scope reprices right away, and the scope total updates. The summary at the bottom shows how much of the total is tax, as Included tax.

Don’t see the gear? It only appears once the scope has at least one item from your Cost Book, and only for people who are allowed to edit prices.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

  • One rate per project. The rate applies to every taxable line in that project’s scope. Different jobs can have different rates, but there’s no company-wide default — set it on each project.

  • Tax is built into the line price. It’s calculated on the line’s full amount, markup included, and then rolled into that line’s Amount. Your client sees prices with tax already included. There isn’t a separate tax line on the quote, the client’s view, or invoices.

  • The Taxable box is copied, not linked. Ticking or unticking Taxable? in the Cost Book affects items you add from then on. Lines already sitting in a scope keep the setting they came in with.

  • Locked scopes are locked for tax too. Once a contract is signed or the project has started, the Tax Settings gear is greyed out along with the rest of the scope. New work after that goes through a change order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where’s the tax rate setting? I’ve looked everywhere.

It’s the gear icon next to the Amount column header on a project’s Scope tab. If it isn’t there, the scope doesn’t have any Cost Book items in it yet — add one first.

My tax rate shows 0. How do I change it?

Click the gear next to Amount on the Scope tab, type your rate, and click Save. Then check that the lines you want taxed came from your Cost Book with Taxable? ticked — a rate on its own doesn’t tax lines that aren’t marked taxable.

Can I tax a line I typed in by hand?

Not directly. Add the item to your Cost Book, tick Taxable?, and add it to the scope from there. If you just need the total to come out right on one quote, some contractors add a line named “Sales tax” with the dollar amount instead — it works, but it won’t update itself when the scope changes.

Can I set one tax rate for my whole company?

Not right now. The rate is set per project, from that project’s Scope tab.

Will my client see a separate tax line?

No. Tax is included in each taxable line’s price. If your client needs to see the tax broken out, mention it in the line’s description or in your contract terms.

Does this work in the mobile app?

Set up your taxable items and the tax rate on the web. Once the rate is set, editing a taxable line in the app reprices it with tax included.
